The cut is flattering, the color is saturated, the fabric description mentions "moisture-wicking four-way stretch technology," and you add it to cart. Six weeks later, half of it has migrated to the back of the drawer. The reason is almost never fit. It's almost always fabric behavior under real conditions — sweat, repeated washing, friction — and that's the thing no thumbnail communicates.
When you see "polyester-spandex blend," the ratio matters more than the blend itself. A 90/10 polyester-spandex is a very different garment from an 80/20. Higher spandex content gives you more recovery — the fabric bounces back after stretching rather than bagging out at the knees after an hour of movement. Cheaper pieces use less elastane to cut cost, and you'll notice it by the third or fourth wash when the waistband starts to roll and the thighs go slack.
Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter (GSM), and this number tells you more than any marketing language. A 180–200 GSM fabric is what most mid-weight leggings land at — substantial enough to avoid being sheer when you hinge at the hip, light enough not to trap heat during cardio. Below 160 GSM, sheerness becomes a real risk, especially in lighter colors. Above 220 GSM, you're in thermal territory, which is appropriate for outdoor cold-weather use but miserable in a heated studio.
Compression in activewear is thrown around loosely. Technically, graduated compression garments — the kind used for circulation and recovery — are rated in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Mild compression sits around 8–15 mmHg, medium compression is roughly 18–25 mmHg. Most activewear marketed as "compression" doesn't hit those numbers; it offers mild muscle support and proprioceptive feedback rather than clinical compression. That's fine for training, but if you're buying post-run recovery tights expecting meaningful circulatory benefit, you'll want to look for pieces that actually state a pressure rating.
What compression does reliably in activewear is reduce chafe and muscle oscillation during impact. A tighter short under a loose running skirt, for instance, prevents the inner-thigh friction that cotton shorts create over longer distances. That functional benefit is real even when the garment isn't technically compressive.
Flatlock seams — the kind stitched flat so there's no raised ridge — are standard in quality activewear and the detail that separates a piece you can run in from one you can only wear to brunch. Raised seams on inner thighs and under the arms will rub. You won't feel it in the store, you might not feel it in a 20-minute session, but in a 90-minute class or a long run, the skin at those contact points tells you immediately.
A pattern that shows up repeatedly in returned activewear: the seam along the crotch gusset. A poorly placed or poorly constructed gusset creates a pressure point or bunching that no amount of fabric quality fixes. A diamond-shaped gusset — wider and cut on the bias — moves with the body during squats and lunges in a way that a simple straight seam can't.
There's a real tension in activewear that doesn't get said enough. The fabrics that perform best — high-density synthetics that wick fast and resist pilling — are also the ones most likely to trap odor over time, irritate skin sensitive to synthetic materials, and feel suffocating to people who run hot. Natural fibers like merino wool solve the odor and breathability problem genuinely, but they sacrifice some durability and stretch recovery. You can't fully have both. If you have reactive skin or find yourself overheating in synthetic pieces, the answer isn't a better synthetic — it's accepting the tradeoff and looking at natural-fiber or natural-blend options, even if they cost more and require more careful washing.
The waistband is the first thing to fail on cheaper activewear. The elastic inside the fold degrades before the fabric does, and once it starts rolling or losing tension, the garment is done. A wide waistband — roughly 3 inches or more — distributes pressure better and is less likely to fold under during movement. Bonded or silicone-grip inner waistbands keep everything in place during inversions and high-movement activities without adding bulk.
Pockets are where marketing diverges sharply from reality. Side seam pockets on leggings sound useful, but if the opening is less than about 4 inches wide, a modern phone won't enter without a fight. A rear zip pocket is more secure for running; a hip pocket with a key clip is more useful for a gym bag scenario. Think about where your hands actually go during the activity before treating pocket placement as a bonus feature.
